Are We Alone In Illinois?

Submitted by Patrick from Illinois in response to “What Are Your Issues”.

In IL we are in the midst of crisis in political party representation, budget and debt, etc. I have heard from a trusted source that our Vocational Rehabilitation staff has been reduced by 25%, the Governor’s current budget being reviewed calls for significant reductions in services related to long-term support like PA’s, maintenance and repair related to vehicles (ex; van lifts), and other critical supports for pwd to enter or maintain in the workforce.

Are other states experiencing like drastic cuts to support and service?

It will be interesting to see how states deal with their budget woes - California, South Carolina, Tennessee, and other are trying to cut back Medicaid and other disability services. As states are making cuts people are pursuing the legal system to try to prevent harmful cuts from happening. One federal court has prevented a state from cutting disability services already…

What is your state experiencing in cuts to voc rehab, employment, home and community based services under Medicaid and other services to people with disabilities?

I used voc rehab in Illinois in the mid 70’s returned to school, worked 28 years paying taxes why cut a program that can return money to the state?

  • CA did dirty deals -
cut all medi -cal ( medicaid) optional then back door resinstated by one well lobbied group not by medical need!

    Sure its IN FEDERAL VIOLATION
but there is no one to represent us on this
    and
VOC Rehab DISCRIMINATION and well funded CAP failure add lack of accessible housing and shelter and more TURN US PEOPLE WITH ABILITY and disability - UNABLE
    most want to be

    but
THE SYSTEM WAS BROKEN LONG BEFORE IT WAS BROKE.

There has been two different articles that have came out in the local paper here in Oceanside CA over the last two months talking about how Govenor Swataenegger is wanting to do away with the In Home Support Program all together. He is saying that there is not going to be enough money for the program to be funded. He has already made drastic cuts to other services that peole with disabilities here in California depend on like public transportation to get back and forth to dr’s appointments and things like that. IN reguards to the transportation issue he has taken all of the monies that were suppost to be alloted to transit and used it to fill the budget gaps in other programs.
