More states are examining the idea of legalizing marijuana for people living with chronic conditions including spinal cord injuries and disorders (i.e., MS, ALS, etc). Oregon and California allow marijuana dispensaries for people with legitimate marijuana medical cards. Should the federal government follow suit?

There is a rumor going around that health care will be rationed under any of the proposed health care reform bills currently before Congress. For those of us in the spinal cord injury and disability community, my question is… so, what’s new?
To be clear, rationing occurs whenever any third party (i.e. your insurance company, Medicare, Medicaid) decides whether or not to pay for something that your health care provider has prescribed for you. Depending on your point of view, rationing can look very differently.

To address some of the misinformation about health reform:
Myth:
Health reform means the government will ration health care.
Fact:
Health insurance will be offered through a health insurance exchange that will be open to all private health insurers and will require health coverage that is often “rationed” now – such as by annual or life-time caps on benefits or by paying only for a set number of visits for some services such as rehabilitation or mental health care – no matter how much the individual needs it.
