Do You Support Healthcare for People with Disabilities?

Given all of the TV, radio and news coverage on healthcare reform it can be difficult to understand the reform effort and the details that are in it. You might find yourself asking, “What does healthcare reform mean for me?” “Why should I support this reform effort?”……

It’s true that the healthcare reform package that has been being worked on in Congress has things that people like (i.e. coverage for preexisting conditions and no lifetime caps) and things that people don’t like (possible taxes on different groups of people). But what does it mean for people with disabilities? The Arc and United Cerebral Palsy put together a great fact sheet on provisions in the health care reform bill that directly affects people with disabilities in a positive way.

Fact sheet on provisions of the health care reform bill (pdf)

Congress has worked tirelessly for over a year, holding public committee hearings and work sessions that were broadcast on C-SPAN and other outlets to put together a health reform package. The health reform package went through five different committees and both the House and Senate. Now they need to iron out their differences to reach agreement on true health reform.

Spinal Cord Advocates has sent a letter to Congress urging them to not give up on healthcare reform and to move forward to the finish line. At the end of the day, this legislation WILL help people with disabilities. Congress needs to finish the job it started and enact healthcare reform!
