The Turning Point

The following was submitted by Bonnie from Kansas in response to “What Are Your Issues”:

“I am the mother of a 30 year old quadriplegic. Dustin was in an ATV accident 5 years ago in which accident he broke his neck. After spending substantial time in ICU and a Rehab Hospital, Dustin was sent to a “rehab/nursing home” for convalescence. This was the most horrible time in Dustin’s life-he contacted staff infection, was left alone a lot which caused his anxiety levels to rise, Medicaid was being charged for therapies and programs that were not even used on Dustin, and I could go on and on. The turning point for Dustin is when he was allowed to get an apartment and even though he requires 24 hour care, he feels more independent which gives him motivation to get out in the world, set goals for himself, and to live like a human being!”

    Bonnie -

Your story affirms what we know and fight for every day - with the right supports, people with disabilities can thrive in their communities and stay out of nursing homes.

Best of luck to you and Dustin -

  • I’m glad to hear your son is able to live on his own. I was able to for a short time and was very glad to have the opportunity. Hopefully all those who want to will be able to have what Dustin does.
